The Significance of Wednesday in Islam,The Importance of Wednesday in Islam,Historic events on Wednesday ,

Wednesday is a cursed day (for the infidels). It is narrated from Hazrat Ali and Hazrat Jaabir and Hazrat ‘Ayesha – may Allah be pleased with Them – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – has stated that Wednesday is a cursed day.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbaas – may Allah be pleased with Him – that the last Wednesday of the month is permanently cursed.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas Ibn Maalik – may Allah be pleased with Him – that:

When the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him was asked about Wednesday he replied, “It’s a cursed day.”  When asked, “And how is that, O Allah’s Messenger?”  He replied, “Because Allah Almighty had drowned Pharaoh on this day and He perished the nation of ‘Aad and Thamood on this day.”

(Ghunyatut Taalibeen p. 73)

The Ulama of Shariah have declared that Wednesday is in fact a cursed day only for the infidels but for Muslims, it is a blessed day.

(Tafseer Saawi Vol. 4, p. 125)

It is for this reason Wednesday is called the day of Noor, which is indeed a day of Noor for the Muslims.  The pious predecessors initiate their teachings and classes on Wednesdays, for the knowledge is light and it is suitable to begin on the day of Noor.

It is disallowed in some narrations to cut nails on Wednesday, for it causes the disease of leprosy.

Story:

A pious ‘Aalim used to cut his nails on Wednesday, and when he was told about the Hadeeth which states that it is Makrooh to cut nails on Wednesday, he stopped cutting nails on that day but then once again he started cutting nails deliberately on a Wednesday and got afflicted by leprosy.

He saw the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – in his dream.  The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – said to him, “Did you not listen to my Hadeeth about the condemnation of cutting nails on Wednesday?”

He replied, “That Hadeeth did not appear to be sound in my opinion.”

“My Hadeeth narration was just sufficient for you”, said the Holy prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – and then he rubbed his hand on his body compassionately and the disease of leprosy was cured completely.

(Faid Al-Qadeer Vol. 1, p. 46)

Important Events That Occurred On Wednesday:

Allah Almighty destroyed 7 types of kuffaars by seven things:

  1. He destroyed ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq by Hudhud
  2. Korah by sinking him in the groud
  3. Pharaoh and his army by the ocean
  4. Namrood by mosquito bite
  5. The nation of Hazrat Loot – peace be upon Him – with stones
  6. Shaddaad Ibn ‘Aad with the voice of Hazrat Jibreel – peace be upon Him
  7. The nation of ‘Aad with the wind.

(Kitaab Al-Sab’iyyaat p. 80)

  1. The Destruction of ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq:

It is narrated that the age of ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq was 4,500 years and he was of a very gigantic and tall stature.  He was so tall that the water of the flood of Hazrat Nooh – peace be upon Him – did not rise above his knees.  It is also mentioned that he would sit on a mountain, stretch out his hand into the ocean and grab the fish, and then he would roast them in the sun and eat them.  Whenever he got upset with any people he would urinate over them and they would drown in it.

When Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – entered the plain of Teeh with Bani Israel ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq wanted to destroy them.  When he approached the army of Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – he saw that the army covered a massive area.  He uprooted a mountain and place it over his head with the intention of throwing it on the army of Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – in an attempt to kill them.

Allah Almighty sent a woodpecker with a diamond and he placed the diamond on top of the mountain which was on the head of ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq.  With the Power of Allah Almighty the diamond penetrated the mountain all the way down to his neck and ripped it open resulting in the death of ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq .

It is also mentioned that the height of Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – was 40 yards and so was the length of his staff, he jumped 40 yards high up into the air and hit ‘Auj Ibn ‘Unuq with his staff which injured his ankle but the strike was so powerful that it resulted in his death.  The enormous strength and power of ‘Auj could not save him from death.

(Kitaab Al-Sab’iyyaat p. 81)

  1. The End of Korah

Korah was Hazrat Moosa’s – peace be upon Him – uncle, Yashur’s son.  He was a very handsome and good looking man which is why people, overwhelmed by his good looks, used to call him Munawwar (the luminous one), and aside from that, he possessed one more excellence, that is he was a great scholar of Torah Shareef and he was also very socio-friendly and a man of morals.  People had great respect for him but after acquiring limitless wealth he completely changed.

He became a hypocrite like Saamiri and became the worst enemy of Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – and became extremely arrogant.  When the command of Zakah was revealed he promised Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – that he will pay thousandth of the share from all his assets but when he estimated the amount a large share was deducted as Zakah.  Seeing this he went crazy with misery and greed and he did not only go against the Zakah but also began to mislead Bani Israel that Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – wants to invade your assets by making the excuse of Zakah.  He even planned a conspiracy to degrade Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – in people’s eyes and gave a woman abundant wealth for putting a blasphemous blame on Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – of adultery.

At the time when Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – was delivering a speech and addressing the people, Korah interrupted him saying, “You have committed adultery with a certain woman.”  Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – told him to present that woman.  Hence, when the woman was presented and Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – asked her:

“I swear by the One who split the ocean for Bani Israel and made pathway within it, and revealed the Torah, speak the truth.”

The woman feared and did not have courage to put blame on Allah’s Messenger, and she repented in her heart, and said to Hazrat Moosa, “I swear by Allah!  Whatever Korah is attempting me to utter is all a lie, and he has promised me a great deal of wealth in lieu of your blasphemy”.

Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – cried and fell into Sajdah before his Lord and said, “O My Lord!  If I am Your Messenger then reveal your anger on Korah because of me.”

Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – told Bani Israel, “O Bani Israel, Allah Almighty has sent me to Korah as He had appointed me on Pharaoh.  Whoever is with Korah must stand beside him and whoever is with me must detach from him.”

Everyone detached from Korah except two individuals, and then Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – commanded the earth to capture them, and they sank till their knees, and then he repeated, and this time, they sank till their waist.  He repeated till they were sunk till their necks.  They now began to beg him and Korah began to give him Allah’s oath and promised him, and reminded him of the family bond and his relationship with him but he did not pay heed, and then they were completely sunken into the earth and the ground became flat.

Two evil persons of Bani Israel who were in favour of Korah spread rumour that Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – might have cursed him for his wealth,  properties and assets.

When he came to hear it, he made Du’a to Allah Almighty, and all his wealth, assets and properties along with his house were sunken into the earth.

(Saawi Vol. 4, p. 1546-1547)

  1. The Destruction of Pharaoh and his Army

Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – continued to preach to Pharaoh for a lengthy duration of time and showed him the signs and miracles, but he remained persistent on ignoring the truth but he rather became more transgressive and crossed all the limits.  Since, Bani Israel did not accept him as God therefore he oppressed the believing ones to a great extent and it was at that particular time when Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – received revelation to migrate from Egypt along with his nation of Bani Israel in the night all of a sudden.  Hence, He migrated with them at night.

When Pharaoh came to know about it, he also left with his army to capture them.  When both the groups were close to one another Bani Israel began to scream in fear, for they believed that they will now be captured by Pharaoh and they all became hopeless to see the waves of the ocean in front and the army of Pharaoh in the back.  At this chaotic occasion Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – was content but his nation was in a great deal of worry.  When they reached closer to the ocean Allah Almighty commanded Hazrat Moosa – peace be upon Him – to strike in the water with his stick.  When he hit his stick in the water twelve pathways were made in it and Bani Israel peacefully crossed the ocean walking through those pathways but when Pharaoh and his army reached the centre of the ocean it suddenly began to cause heavy waves and all the pathways were destroyed.  Pharaoh and his army were drowned in it.  The Holy Quran narrates this incident in the following manner:

فَلَمَّا تَرٰٓءَ الْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ اَصْحٰبُ مُوۡسٰۤی اِنَّا لَمُدْرَکُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۶۱﴾

Then when the two groups saw each other, the people of Musa said, ‘They have over taken us’.

Musa said, ‘Not so, undoubtedly my Lord is with me, He guided me just now.

Then We revealed to Musa, strike the sea with your staff hence the sea was parted, and every part was like a big mountain.

And We brought others nearer to that place.

And We saved Musa and all those with him.

Then We drowned the others.

Undoubtedly in it necessarily is a sign.

(Al-Shu’ara 26, Verse 61-67)

(Ajaib Al-Quran of Allamah Abdul Mustafa Aazmi)

  1. The Destruction of Namrood

Allah Almighty had destroyed Namrood by mosquito on Wednesday.  Namrood was the king who ruled over the entire globe and he claimed to be a god.  Hazrat Ibraheem – peace be upon Him – was sent to guide him but he was persistent on his disobedience and arrogance and did not accept the Da’wah of Hazrat Ibraheem – peace be upon Him.  He was too boastful of his kingdom and massive army and manpower and challenged Hazrat Ibraheem – peace be upon Him – saying, “Bring the army of your Lord and I bring mine, so then we fight and your Lord can try to take away my kingdom.”

He had the army of 700,000 soldiers with the latest weaponry.

Hazrat Ibraheem – peace be upon Him – made Du’a to Allah Almighty that Namrood has already brought his army onto the battlefield and awaiting the army of Allah.

Allah Almighty answered the Du’a of Hazrat Ibraheem – peace be upon Him – and sent the army of mosquitos from the seashore.  Mosquitos are considered as the most fragile creation of Allah Almighty.  Other animal species are satisfied by eating to their capacity but when mosquitos are full they die.

The mosquitos were in such large number that the entire battlefield was filled with mosquitos.  They ate the flesh of Namrood’s army and drank their blood and after a little while, the army of Namrood was destroyed and a mosquito entered inside Namrood’s brain and continued to eat his brain for forty days after which the false god died.

(Kitaab Al-Sab’iyyaat p. 86)

  1. The Destruction of Thamood, the Nation of Hazrat Saleh – peace be upon Him

Hazrat Saleh – peace be upon Him – was sent as a Prophet towards the nation of Thamood.  When he invited them to embrace Imaan by delivering Allah’s commands to them those nasty people demanded him to perform a miracle that he must take out a pregnant camel from the middle of mountains which must be healthy and free from all defects.

Hence, he pointed at a rock and it instantly burst and a beautiful, tall and healthy she-camel emerged from within and she was also pregnant.  She bore her infant right after coming out of it and grazed in the field with her infant.

That town had only one pond that used to fill with the spring-water from mountains around it.  He told them, “Look O people, it’s a miraculous camel and one day, she will drink all the water of the pond and then you will drink from it the next day.”  They accepted it and then he delivered the following Quranic speech in front of them:

‘O my people! Worship Allah, you have no God other than He. Undoubtedly, there has come to you bright proof from your Lord, this is a she-camel of Allah a sign for you. So leave her that she may eat in Allah’s earth and touch her not with evil, lest a painful torment will overtake you.

(Al-A’raaf 7, Verse 73)

They were patient on the hardship for few days due to not getting water for one day, for the camel used to drink all the water of the pond, therefore, they decided to kill the camel.

Qadaar Ibn Saalif:

This man was red in complexion with brown eyes.  He was of short stature and the son of an adulteress woman.  He came forward to kill the camel with the consensual agreement of all the people.  Hazrat Saleh – peace be upon Him – kept on trying to stop him but he did not listen.  He firstly cut all four legs of the camel and then slaughtered it, and then he had a dialogue with Hazrat Saleh – peace be upon Him – in a very indecent way.  Allah Almighty states in the Holy Quran:

فَعَقَرُوا النَّاقَۃَ وَعَتَوْا عَنْ اَمْرِ رَبِّہِمْ وَقَالُوۡا یٰصٰلِحُ ائْتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَاۤ اِنۡ کُنۡتَ مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۷۷﴾

Then they hamstrung the she-camel and rebelled against the command of their Lord and said, ‘O Saleh, ‘bring upon us that which you are promising for, if you are a Messenger.

(Al-A’raaf 7, Verse 77)

The Torment of Earthquake:

Allah’s punishment descended on the nation of Thamood as a fierce roar, and then there were deadly earthquakes in which the entire town was turned upside down and everything was destroyed.  All the buildings were demolished and each and every member of the nation of Thamood fell on their knees and died.

The Holy Quran mentioned as follows:

فَاَخَذَتْہُمُ الرَّجْفَۃُ فَاَصْبَحُوۡا فِیۡ دَارِہِمْ جٰثِمِیۡنَ ﴿۷۸﴾

Then the earthquake took them so in the morning they lay prostrate in their homes.

(Al-A’raaf 7, Verse 78)

When Hazrat Saleh – peace be upon Him – saw that the whole town has been destroyed with severe earthquakes and became a dump-yard of bricks and stones, and the entire nation has been killed, he became very sad.  He hated the nation of Thamood and their town so much that he turned his face on them and while he was leaving he told the dead corpse the following on his way:

فَتَوَلّٰی عَنْہُمْ وَقَالَ یٰقَوْمِ لَقَدْ اَبْلَغْتُکُمْ رِسَالَۃَ رَبِّیۡ وَنَصَحْتُ لَکُمْ وَلٰکِنۡ لَّاتُحِبُّوۡنَ النّٰصِحِیۡنَ ﴿۷۹﴾

Then Saleh turned back his face from them and said, ‘O my people! Undoubtedly, I did deliver to you the messages of my Lord, and wished your good, but you do not approve the well-wishers.

(Al-A’raaf 7, Verse 79)

As a conclusion, the whole nation of Thamood was destroyed and not even one of them remained alive.  No descendant of their nation exists today on the earth’s surface.

(Tafseer Saawi Vol. 2, p. 688)

  1. The Destruction of Shaddaad Ibn ‘Aad

You have already studied earlier that the primary ancestor of the nation of ‘Aad is ‘Aad Ibn ‘Aws Ibn Iram Ibn Saam Ibn Nooh.  Shaddaad is also one of the descendants of ‘Aad.  He was a great kind and he had all the other kings of his time under his control.  Hearing of paradise from the Prophets he wanted to build a paradise in the world due to the grandiose of himself.  He made a very large city and built its houses of gold and silver bricks and their pillars were made of precious stones and rubyies and he made the floors also to the similar effect with pearls instead of stones.

Streams were flowing near every palace.  He had different kinds of trees planted for shade.  He had every aspect of luxury and comfort he could think of.  When the construction was completed the king was prepared to enter into his paradise and he travelled towards it with his men.  He was close to approaching it and a horrific voice came from the sky through which Allah Almighty had destroyed Shaddaad and all his men, and he could not even get to see his manmade paradise.

During the caliphate of Hazrat Ameer Mu’awiyah, Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Qalabah passed through the desert of ‘Adn searching for his lost camel and entered that city and saw all its luxurious decorations but he did not see anyone living there.

He took some jewels and left the area.  This news reached Hazrat Ameer Mu’awiya’s ears and he called Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Qalabah and asked him about whatever he had seen and he told him everything.

Hazrat Ameer Mu’awiya then called Hazrat Ka’b Ahbaar – may Allah be pleased with Them – and asked him, “Is there such a place in the world?”  He replied, “Yes.  It is also mentioned in the Holy Quran.  This city was built by Shaddaad Ibn ‘Aad but then all were destroyed by Allah’s punishment and none of them remained alive but during your caliphate, there will be a man of short stature whose eyes will be blue and he will have a beauty spot on his eyebrow, he will approach this place searching for his camel.”

Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Qalabah entered during this conversation, and Hazrat Ka’b Ahbaar said when he saw him, “By Allah!  He is the man who will see the manmade paradise of Shaddaad.”

(Khazaain Al-‘Irfaan p. 1069-1070)

The Holy Quran has stated when mentioning the state of the nation of ‘Aad and other disobedient nations as follows:

اَلَمْ تَرَ کَیۡفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّکَ بِعَادٍ ﴿۶﴾۪ۙ

Have you not seen, what did your Lord with Aad?

The people of Iram excessively tall,

The like of whom have not been created in cities.

And with Thamud who hewed out rocks in the valley.

And with Firawn (Pharaoh) who pilloried.

Those who transgressed in the cities.

And spread mischief therein

Therefore your Lord let down upon them the whip of torment with force.

(Al-Fajr 89, Verse 6-13)

  1. The Destruction of The Nation of ‘Aad

The ‘Aad were the residents of the place called Ahqaaf which is situated in a desert between Hadramaut and Amman.  The name of their ascendant is ‘Aad Ibn ‘Aus Ibn Iram Ibn Saam Ibn Nooh – peace be upon hHm.  They began to call the nation by the name of ‘Aad after their ascendant’s name.

These idol-worshippers had evil ways and were very indecent people.  Allah’s Almighty appointed Hazrat Hood – peace be upon Him – on them to show them guidance but due to their ego and arrogance they falsified him and were persistent on their infidelity.  Hazrat Hood – peace be upon Him – repeatedly reminded them of the fear of punishment but this nasty bunch of people very bluntly said the following to their Nabi in a disrespectful manner:

قَالُوۡۤا اَجِئْتَنَا لِنَعْبُدَ اللہَ وَحْدَہٗ وَنَذَرَ مَاکَانَ یَعْبُدُ اٰبَآؤُنَا ۚ فَاۡتِنَا بِمَا تَعِدُنَاۤ اِنۡ کُنۡتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۷۰﴾

They said, ‘Have you come to us that we should worship Allah alone and leave what our fathers used to worship, then bring you that, you are promising for us if you are truthful.

(Al-A’raaf 7, Verse 70)

At last, The signs of Allah’s punishment began to raise their head and it did not rain for three years at all and there was drought everywhere which was so severe that people were desperate for a grain.  The tradition in that era was such that when people were afflicted by a calamity they would go to Makkah Mukarramah and pray before the Holy Ka’bah, and the calamity used to be removed.

Hence, a caravan left for Makkah Mukarramah in the leadership of Marthad Ibn Sa’d who was a believer but he hid his Imaan from the nation.

When they began to pray in the Holy Ka’bah the Imaan of Marthan Ibn Sa’d got more enlightened and he told his nation, “No matter how much you pray but by Allah! It will never rain unless you believe in the Nabi Hood – peace be upon Him.  When he revealed his Imaan the nasty people of ‘Aad beat him up and separated him from the rest, and then engaged in their prayers.

Allah Almighty sent three clouds at that time; one was white, the second cloud was red and the third was black, and a voice came from the sky, “O the nation of ‘Aad!  Choose one cloud out of these for your nation.”  They chose the black cloud and they were celebrating thinking that the black cloud will bring heavy rain.  Hence, the black cloud began to move towards their land.  The people of ‘Aad became very happy upon seeing the black cloud.  Hazrat Hood – peace be upon Him – said, “Look, Allah’s punishment is coming in the form of a cloud and approaching you.”  But they belied him and made fun of him saying, “What punishment are you talking about?!  It is just a cloud that will bring us rain.”

(Roohul Bayaan Vol. 3, p. 187-189)

This cloud is kept coming and expanding from a westerly direction above the residential areas and suddenly brought a terrible hurricane which was so heavy and speedy that it even flew their camels along with the goods on their backs and threw them at different places.  Seeing this, the nation of ‘Aad went inside their buildings and locked their gates but the strokes of the hurricane didn’t only uproot their gates but also shook their buildings and demolished them.  The hurricane continued for 7 nights and 8 days until each and every member of that nation was dead, and not even a child of their nation was left alive.

When the hurricane subsided the corpse of the people were lying in a manner like the palm trees fall and lie on the ground.  Allah Almighty hence stated in the Holy Quran:

وَ اَمَّا عَادٌ فَاُہۡلِکُوۡا بِرِیۡحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِیَۃٍ ۙ﴿۶﴾

And as for Aad, they were destroyed by a fierce roaring windstorm.

Which He subjected them forcefully for seven nights and eight days consecutively, then see those people in it lying down, as though they were trunks of palm-trees lying down.

Do you see any remnant of them?

(Al-Haaqqah 69, Verse 6-8)

And then by the power of Allah Almighty a group of black birds took the dead bodies and threw them into the ocean, and Hazrat Hood – peace be upon Him – abandoned that area and took along some people who had embraced Imaan with him and went to Makkah Mukarramah and worshipped in the Holy Ka’bah till the end of his life.

(Tafseer Baidawi Vol. 2, p. 686)

The Fast of Wednesday:

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – stated that one who will fast on Wednesday and Thursday and Friday the palaces made of pearls and rubies will be prepared for him in paradise.

(Ghunyatut Taalibeen Vol. 2, p. 73)

The Nafl Salah of Wednesday:

It is narrated from Hazrat Mu’aaz Ibn Jabal – may Allah be pleased with Him – that the Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – has stated that if one prays 12 Rak’ats Salah on Wednesday when the sun is at height; in each Rak’at recite Surah Fatiha once, Ayatul Kursi once, Surah Ikhlaas thrice and Mu’awwadhatain (Surah Falaq and Naas) thrice then an angel from the ‘Arsh of Allah calls him and says to him, “O Allah’s servant!  Your past sins have been forgiven and the punishment of grave and its narrowness also has been removed and you have been saved from the hardship of the Day of Qiyaamah.  Keep on doing good in the future.”  His action of that day will be raised like the deeds of the Prophets.

(Ihya Uloomiddeen Vol. 1, p. 205; Ghunyatut Taalibeen Vol. 2, p. 141)

The Nafl Salah of Wednesday Night:

The Holy Prophet – may Allah send peace and blessings upon Him – has stated that the one who prays two Rak’ats Salah in Wednesday night; in the first Rak’at Surah Fatiha once and Surah Falaq 10 times and in the second, Surah Fatiha once and Surah Naas 10 times then 70,000 angels descend from all skies and continue to write his rewards till the Day of Qiyamah.

(Ihya Uloomiddeen Vol. 1, p. 206; Ghunyatut Taalibeen Vol. 2, p. 143)
